Pooley Wines 0408 652 296 (Mathew Pooley) Vineyards and Cellar Doors: The late Denis Pooley and his wife Margaret established our small family vineyard at Cooinda Vale Estate in 1985. There are now 3 generations of Pooleys involved in the business. The vineyard is ideally positioned facing northeast overlooking the Coal River in southern Tasmania. On the 43.5 Latitude line, the vineyard is planted on northeast facing slopes at 130m above sea level in this unique microclimatic location, being well protected from prevailing winds but still highly influenced by maritime conditions. The long growing season, which can extend into May, with high sunshine hours, predominately winter rainfall and the occasional frost and snow, combine to provide an excellent condition for the cool climate grape varieties, such as Pinot Noir, Riesling, and Chardonnay. The soils are Brown-Black dermosol (associated with alluvial plains and river terraces) over decaying sandstone, with friable clay subsoil, and because of the sloping aspect, the drainage is excellent. Being a family owned and operated vineyard & cellar door, we are passionate and focused on maximizing the quality and boutiqueness of our operation. We believe our site provides a unique meso-climate to produce very distinctive wines with most of the wine making being done in the vineyard. The growing of moderate yields, well exposed, very ripe grapes are the basis for our fruit driven styles of wine. |
