Finish first, start later

by Lian Tanner
04 Oct 2021

When I was in my 20s, I tried to write a children’s story about two characters called Mr Gumshackle and Miss Leatherbarrow. Looking back, the idea was way too cute, and I was trying to be too clever, and I doubt if anyone except me would have been interested in reading it. That’s part of the learning process, of course, writing badly over and over again until you start to improve. Or, as Samuel Beckett said, “Try again. Fail again. Fail better.”

Writing with a map

by Lian Tanner
24 May 2021

I was asked to present a workshop for the Tasmanian Writers Centre this year, on a subject of my choice. So I did one on plotting. Plotting is one of those things that divides writers into two camps. Do I map out the story before I start my novel, or do I just begin writing and see what happens? The latter is also known as pantsing”, as in “writing by the seat of my pants”.

Street libraries: Discovering an island through its books

by Don Defenderfer
01 Jan 2021

Not long ago I was on the island of Kauai when I spotted a street library in rustic Hanalei, and I was fascinated by this free exchange of books on the main street. An old wooden pantry was full of island reading books that one can find the world over – spy novels, mysteries, fantasy, history, romance and travel books – and so I slipped my poetry book among The Destroyer Killer (Edwin Hoyt), Murder in the House (Margaret Truman) and Husbands, Lover, Stranger (Suzanne Forster). A little poetry would not go astray, I reasoned, and would give the reader a choice for an island afternoon of escape reading.

Book or play?

by Lian Tanner
25 Dec 2020

I was having lunch with some friends a while ago, and they asked me how the new book was going. It’s always a tricky question to answer, and depending on the day or the hour, I might smile and say, “Pretty good,” or fall on the floor sobbing.

Who’s a villain? Not me

by Lian Tanner
02 Dec 2020

One of the most common questions I get from kids is, “Who’s your favourite character from your own books?” It’s a hard question to answer. I love Goldie, Broo, Toadspit, Petrel, Mister Smoke and Missus Slink, Fin, Sharkey and pretty much every else as well. It’d be much easier if people asked, “Who’s your favourite character to write?” “The Fugleman,” I’d reply. “Guardian Hope. Brother Poosk. Or, in The Rogues, the Harshman.”

We pay our respects to the Tasmanian Aboriginal people as the traditional and original owners and continuing custodians of lutruwita, and acknowledge elders past and present.
