Young Tasmania
Sylvia McArthur was born in Zeehan in 1897, and as a teenager lived in Balfour, where one of her amusements was writing to the "Young Folks" page of the "Weekly Courier" newspaper, based in Launceston. Sylvia, her love of writing and her many letters to Dame Durden, the editor of the Young Folks page, are the subject of James Dryburgh's beautiful book "The Balfour Correspondent", published in 2017. The reason I mention all this is to show that the publishing industry has a long tradition of engaging with younger members of the community. It is a tradition we are extending. Welcome to the "Young Tasmania" section of the Forty South website. Here you will find words, art and photography by Tasmanians aged 21 or under. Individually, submissions should come to me for appraisal and potential publication. I will be following in the footsteps of Dame Durden and many others, a task which will be both an honour and a responsibility. Collectively, this will be a celebration of you, our youth. ~ Chris Champion Editor, Young Tasmania
