Celebrating 250 Consecutive Days of Ocean Swimming: A Remarkable Journey Towards Mental Health Advocacy

On the 5th of September 2023, Ivan Cunningham, a dedicated ocean swimmer, achieved a remarkable milestone by completing 250 consecutive days of ocean swimming at Hinsby, Taroona, and Kingston beaches. Fuelled by a desire for new challenges and a commitment to mental health advocacy, Ivan has embarked on an inspiring journey that is set to capture hearts and raise awareness across Tasmania.

In light of this achievement, Ivan has announced a bold new challenge that showcases both determination and a deep passion for mental health support. This November, Ivan will undertake an incredible feat of swimming 22 times in 22 days, covering various locations around Tasmania. The ambitious route will take Ivan anti-clockwise around the island, spanning the East coast, North and Northwest coasts, West coast, and culminating at Sandy Bay beach.

Each swim will cover a minimum distance of 2 kilometres, with some swims spanning up to 10 kilometres, totalling an estimated distance of over 50 kilometres. This event aims not only to demonstrate personal strength but also to shed light on mental health issues and offer hope to those grappling with trauma and suicidality. Ivan believes in the power of positive alternatives and aims to raise funds for Men's Mental Health through Men’s Resources Tasmania.

"Ivan is an embodiment of resilience and change," stated Jonathan Bedloe, Secretary of Men’s Resources Tasmanian (MRT). "This event will not only challenge physical limits but also create a platform for open discussions about mental health."

Throughout the 22-day endeavour, Ivan plans to engage with communities, sharing stories of overcoming fears and obstacles while promoting conversations about mental health. Updates will be regularly shared on various social media platforms, and a dedicated website will facilitate donations to support the cause. Local groups are encouraged to organise breakfast or lunch events to raise funds and awareness for Men's Mental Health.

As a registered counsellor practicing in Hobart, Ivan seeks to drive meaningful change and make a difference in people's lives. The initiative is a testament to the belief that sharing challenges leads to shared solutions.

Ivan extends a warm invitation to fellow ocean enthusiasts to join in the swims across Tasmania, emphasizing that it's not a race but an opportunity to find serenity through simple actions. Spectators are also encouraged to attend and provide uplifting cheers to support the cause.

The event has greatly support from Christopher Guesdon, Patron, and Doug Hughson, President, of the Australian Long-Distance Swimming Federation (ALDSF), as well as Jonathon Bedloe Men’s Resources Tasmania, ex swimming coach Chris Wedd and fellow swimmers from Hinsby and Kingston Ocean Water Swimming.
