Igloo Ripples: the story of a unique fibreglass cabin made for Antarctica and used all over the world, by Anthea Wallhead
Launch date: Thursday 10th November, 5:30-6:30pm, Fullers Afterword Café
The Igloo Satellite Cabin, designed by Malcolm Wallhead (1943-2000) has been used in remote locations in Antarctica and the Arctic, on tropical islands and in areas difficult to access by road, water or air. The Australian Antarctic Division nicknamed their igloo the “Apple” or “Apple Hut”, because it was “round and red and made in Tasmania”. The first Antarctic Igloo marks its 40th anniversary this year (2022).
This beautifully illustrated book charts the remarkable history of this humble, life-saving, iconic piece of architecture, a masterpiece of design and engineering. It also tells the story of the Wallhead family, from their early years living in a hand-built log cabin in Kettering to an international business, and how the Igloo has shaped their lives.
The book will be launched by Sir Guy Green, AC, KBE, CVO, former Chief Justice of Tasmania (1973-1995), and Governor of Tasmania (1995-2003).
